Context

La Storia Infinita is RSI’s historical deep-dive programme (Radiotelevisione svizzera italiana) that tells events, people and key moments from Swiss and international history. In 2025 it reached its fourth season. The format requires a visual approach capable of turning archival material — often photographic and static — into dynamic, engaging content for a contemporary TV audience.
The challenge was ambitious: to make vintage photographs “breathe”, restoring motion and life to historical documents without betraying their authenticity, and to create a smooth visual narrative that respects the dignity of historical memory while keeping the pace and appeal required by television.

The concept

Visiva developed a production system that combines the craftsmanship of graphic motion design with the creative boost offered by AI tools. Each historical image was analysed, broken down into multiple layers and recomposed through a multi-layer animation process that creates depth, movement and a sense of time.
Our team of graphic motion designers personally curated every scene: not automation, but conscious art direction where AI becomes a tool in the hands of professionals with years of experience in visual storytelling. AI amplified the creative possibilities — enabling sophisticated interpolations, perspective reconstructions and fluid transitions — always under the control of the team’s aesthetic judgement and historical sensitivity.
The result is a production of 19 in-depth segments generating 54 minutes of animation, structured into 270 animated scenes created from 181 multi-layer images. Twenty-one scenes included AI integration.
Each vintage photograph was treated as a precious document to enhance, not to distort: movement follows the compositional logic of the original image, narrative timing respects the historical weight of the content, and transitions guide the viewer without distracting from the story.

Result

The in-depth segments created for La Storia Infinita are now an example of how technology can serve historical storytelling without overpowering it. The material enabled RSI to enrich the programme with visually rich, contemporary content while maintaining the rigour and credibility required by a historical documentary format.

The project shows that smart integration between human expertise and technological tools generates value: a perfect balance between past and future, memory and innovation, archival respect and contemporary language. Because great stories deserve to be told with the same care with which they were lived.
